Museums and Exhibitions

You can find number of interesting museums and exhibitions in this area of Troll Peninsula.  Many of them are quite interesting for kids as well as for adults.

  • The Herring Era Museum

    The Herring Era Museum is awarded maritime and industrial museum - where the ‘glory days’ of Iceland’s herring fisheries and industry are brought back to life in three different buildings. Won the Icelandic Museum Award 2000 and the European Museum Award 2004, as Europe´s best new museum of industry and technology.

  • Byggðasafnið Hvoll

    The museum’s collections comprises thousands of items, most of them contributed by local people in Dalvik, Svarfaðardalur and Árskógsströnd. They include various tools and furnishings which provide insight life and work in and around Dalvík, and the history of the community, in addition to items of art and craft made by local people.

    The natural history collection contains a large number of icelandic birds and mammals, and some marine creatures also, along with collections of grasses, shells, eggs and rocks.

    The museum includes exhibits on a number of people from Svarfaðardalur who became nationally famous: Jóhann Pétursson, known as "The Giant," Icelandic president Dr. Kristján Eldjárn, and Friðrik friðriksson, founder of the YMCA in Iceland.

  • Folk Music Centre

    The Folk Music centre brings to life the world of Icelandic folk music. Visitors can see video recordings of people of all ages chanting epic poetry (rímur), singing quint-songs (tvísöngur), reciting nursery rhymes, and playing folk instruments such as the langspil (similar to dulcimer) and the Icelandic violin (fiðla).

    The centre also depicts the life of the Rev. Bjarni Thorsteinsson and how he collected the folk songs.

  • Public Library of Dalvík

    The public library is located in the culural house Berg and is open every day. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the facilities. With a library card  you have access of a diverse collection og books suitable for everybody, adults and children, as well as educational and children´s materials on dvd. If you don´t have a library card you are, of course, welcome to visit us and enjoy our collection of books on site. Internet connections are available. When travelling in Dalvík, the library is a nice and quiet place to go to. You can stop by for a cup of coffee, scan the newspapers and enjoy the view.

  • Natur museum

    Natur museum in Ólafsfjörður. Birds, eggs, polar bear, plants, fox, crab and lot's more. Opening hours; from 1. june - 31. august between 10:00 - 14:00. Please contact Alda Maria in +354 848 4071 if you want to visit the museum at other time.

    The public library is located in Siglufjordur at Granugata 24, the town hall, and  in Olafsfjordur at Olafsvegur 4. The library in Siglufjordur also serves as a tourist information center. There you can get information about activities in Fjallabyggd, buy hiking maps, get information about opening hours, bus schedules camp sites and so on. We offer free wireless access (Wi Fi) and computers are also available for use. Access codes for the computers can be purchased at the circulation desk for a small fee (100 isk.kr) for every 30 minutes. Established in 1964 the public library in Siglufjordur with their 50 year old furnitures and bookshelfes is very beautiful and a visit to the library to enjoy its facilities, or just have a cup of coffee, read or serve the Internet, is totally worth it.

  • Berg culture house

    In the culture house Berg there is a big hall where you can find new art show each month. It is a great place for concerts and other events. The house offers a great facility for meetings or conference. There is a great sound system, projector and Dösendorfer grand piano in the hall.

  • Saga-Fotografica

    The purpose of the museum is the preservation of equipment for photography and photo processing, from various times in addition to exhibit and present. Also, the Museum stand for the presentation of photographs, the history of photography and different methods of photo processing, as well as exhibitions of paintings and sculptures.
    The goal of the museum is to strengthen and interest in photography and photographic, promoting its history and different methods of taking photographs and display photographic works.
